Reading this for the first time today I am reminded of a line from a John Lennon song that says "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". I don't recall much about birthday parties given for me when I was a child but I have copious happy memories of small moments growing up.
Years ago I read a piece in the paper from a terribly successful business man who was sadly dying from cancer. He said he realised too late, that he had spent most of his time with those that mattered least to him. I knew that it also applied to me as I was working very long hours back then. Ten years later I had an opportunity to take early retirement. So at 51 I got out. My pension was reduced and so I have less money however I have the luxury of time. Even chores like hanging out the laundry are now enjoyable as I’m not stressed about deadlines and meetings etc. There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t thank that dead man for sharing his insight. And I’m grateful to you Paddy for using your precious time to write and share your own wisdom with us.
Its a great article, and as someone once reminded me, its not your employer that is listed on your head stone!
We think we have time we don’t.
