This is the first time I have read this anywhere and it would certainly make it seem odd that this quote is inscribed above the entrance of a Christian monastery. My understanding is the quote refers to the Christian idea that one must die to himself (his passions, desires, sins, etc.) in order to follow Christ.

Curious if you have a reference tying the inscription to the Eleusinian Mysteries?
